Who We Are
In 2000 a group of concerned parents, teachers and community members noticed that some students were "falling through the cracks" at McNear Elementary School in Petaluma, California. During the same time period, the state of California drastically cut its funding for elementary school counselors, leaving a lack of support and guidance for many students whose life circumstances put them at risk.
The McNear Mentoring Program was launched In early 2001 with three mentorships in that first year. Additional partner schools were added every year, and in 2004 the name was changed to Mentor Me Petaluma.
The program has continued to expand, and in order to meet the needs of more and more young people beyond Petaluma, the name was changed to Mentor Me. We currently operate mentoring programs in 17 schools in 4 school districts, serving more than 300 students in both Sonoma and Marin Counties. We mentor children and youth ages 5-17.
In August 2014, Mentor Me acquired the Mentor Me Cavanagh Recreation Center and added tutoring, counseling and career exploration services.
Mentor Me continues to work closely with other non-profit organizations, local school districts, service organizations, businesses, government and law enforcement to provide a safety net for youth in need.
Mentor Me is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and operates through donations, grants, and rental income from the Cavanagh Recreation Center.
Throughout our entire history, our mentors who volunteer their time and energy have remained the backbone of everything we do at Mentor Me.
