Volunteer Mentor Job Description
Mentor Role With the Mentee:
- Take the lead in supporting a young person through the consistency of an ongoing, one-to-one relationship.
- Serve as a positive role model and friend.
- Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together.
- Strive for mutual respect and good communication.
Time Commitment:
- Do your best to fulfill the two-year goal.
- Spend a minimum of one hour per week one-to-one with a mentee, during the school year.
- Attend the New Mentor Training session.
- Attend a Mentor Tune-up Training within the first five months of the mentorship and at least one additional Monthly Mentor Meeting per year during each year of participation in the program.
- Attend optional mentor/mentee group events, mentor support groups, field trips and program recognition events. Meeting fellow mentors is fun and rewarding!
Participation Requirements:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Reside in or near the Petaluma area.
- Be interested in working with young people.
- Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures, including child abuse reporting laws.
- Be willing to complete the application and screening process.
- Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments.
- Attend mentor training sessions as prescribed.
- Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities.
- Be willing to complete a written, year-end evaluation form.
