Mentor Role With the Mentee:
  • Take the lead in supporting a young person through the consistency of an ongoing, one-to-one relationship.
  • Serve as a positive role model and friend.
  • Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together.
  • Strive for mutual respect and good communication.

Time Commitment:

  • Do your best to fulfill the two-year goal.
  • Spend a minimum of one hour per week one-to-one with a mentee, during the school year.
  • Attend the New Mentor Training session.
  • Attend a Mentor Tune-up Training within the first five months of the mentorship and at least one additional Monthly Mentor Meeting per year during each year of participation in the program.
  • Attend optional mentor/mentee group events, mentor support groups, field trips and program recognition events. Meeting fellow mentors is fun and rewarding!

Participation Requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Reside in or near the Petaluma area.
  • Be interested in working with young people.
  • Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures, including child abuse reporting laws.
  • Be willing to complete the application and screening process.
  • Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments.
  • Attend mentor training sessions as prescribed.
  • Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities.
  • Be willing to complete a written, year-end evaluation form.
